Three-dimensional Repertoire
Transitions of plane-constellations with cross connections
In groups of two we systematically analyzed the properties and examples of synclastic, anticlastic, singularily and multiply bent curvatures.
In several exercises we became familiar with matrices of different complexities and declined them thoroughly. Picking the topic of cross connections and their plane-constellations, we then examined the cross as a connection of 4 lines, 2 square angles or 2 continuos lines.
We changed their position and relation to each other by shifting, tilting and moving those parts.
Concentrating on the connecting part of those two crosses, we developed an application as a seating bench in a public setting.
By utilizing the flat extrusions as seats and by filling the opened volumes with purpose, we shifted the very linear expression of our chosen shape into a more three-dimensional space.
The fixating poles on either ends of the benches are grounding the rather expressive geometric aesthetics with well known similarities of iron-cast poles as the can be found throughout europe.
The resulting object is a clash of abstract sculptural elements with municipal pettyness, building regulations and preservation order.
I find it rather amusing how we mixed the elements, yet ironically it is pretty close to what an expressive piece of furniture would look like after running through all the regulatory bodies of the public sector.
