Clio

The combination of wood and plastic.
Translating ancient amphoras into a contemporary design

Two qualitative contrary materials such as plastic and wood should be combined to an object situated within the surroundings of a kitchen/food area.

Learning from the variety and oddity of ancient greek vases, I set the topical boundaries to the nine apollonian muses, hoping that I could recreate such a variety by designing amphoras assigned to the distinctive traits of each muse.

I then translated my drafts into contemporary geometries and shapes.

The result is an amphora that presents itself proudly and bold. Referring to Clio the muse of glory and heroic poetry, the vase is quite dominant, yet humble in terms of colour.

It‘s got a lot of character and seems nearly personified.

The choice of greenery shapes the character and yet isn‘t able to exceed it.
